These stories highlight dogs and families from South Jersey who are building calmer, more enjoyable lives together through training.
Skye's Story: Learning to Slow Down
When Skye came to The Well Mannered Dog, she was a happy, enthusiastic six-month-old puppy who sometimes struggled to put the brakes on.
Jumping on people, grabbing hair, mouthiness, and getting carried away with excitement were the biggest concerns. Like many young dogs, Skye wasn't trying to be difficult. She simply didn't have many skills for slowing herself down once excitement started building.
Rather than focusing only on the unwanted behaviors themselves, training centered around helping Skye practice patience, learn how to disengage, and spend more time in a calmer state of mind.
Over the course of her program, I began seeing excitement become less intense and recovery happen more quickly. Waiting at doors, practicing patience before exciting opportunities, learning to disengage when told "no," and building calmer habits throughout the day all contributed to that progress.
Skye also began learning foundational skills like sit, down, recall, and settling quietly while activity happened around her.
Most importantly, she's beginning to learn that she doesn't need to participate in everything immediately. Sometimes the answer is to pause, relax, and wait.
Like any young puppy, Skye is still learning. The real work now is continuing these habits at home and helping her practice the same patience and self-control in everyday life with her family.
I'm excited to watch her continue growing into the calm, enjoyable companion her family knows she can be!
Blue's Story: Building Calm in Everyday Life
Blue came to training as a dog with plenty of enthusiasm and not much of an off switch.
Pulling on leash, barking, stealing items, overexcitement, and difficulty settling were some of the biggest challenges his family was facing. They didn't need a competition obedience dog. They wanted a dog who was easier to live with.
Training focused heavily on creating more structure throughout Blue's day and teaching him how to settle instead of constantly looking for the next exciting thing to do.
Through leash work, structured play, tethering, clear boundaries, and consistent follow-through, Blue began practicing a different way of moving through the world.
Instead of immediately reacting to everything around him, he started learning how to slow down, accept guidance, and make better decisions.
One of the biggest changes was not a specific obedience command. It was seeing Blue become more capable of relaxing, settling, and handling everyday situations without becoming overwhelmed by them.
Like all dogs, Blue is still a work in progress. Training doesn't end when a program ends. The goal was never perfection. The goal was giving Blue and his family a foundation they can continue building on together.
Watching dogs discover that calm is an option is one of my favorite parts of training, and Blue made tremendous progress in that direction.
